We are proudly independent opticians in the heart of Chelmsford who have been caring for the eyes of our local community for many years. Our aim is to provide exceptional eyecare and eyewear for all our patients, regardless of their age or needs.
We take our time with every patient to carry out a thorough eye examination and follow up with advice based on your individual requirements. We only recommend eyewear and eyecare suitable for you from optical brands that we know and trust.

Private and NHS patients are welcome at James Bryan Opticians. We are proud to be a part of the NHS and offer a variety of eye health services in conjunction with local NHS providers.
We have invested in modern optical equipment - such as our hospital quality OCT machine - so we can proactively monitor our patient’s eye health to spot potentially sight threatening conditions at an early stage.

Zahir-Ally Kanji BSc MCOptom DipTp(IP) - Partner & Optometrist
Zahir has over ten years of experience in the field of Optometry and completed the higher qualification of Independent Prescriber.
Zahir has been with James Bryan Opticians since 2018 and has a large following for his sincere and personal style. Zahir's currently a partner with 4 independent optometric practices in Essex and spends his time working as a super sub when needed.
Outside of work, Zahir is a keen sportsman and spends time with his three children ferrying them around to their own sporting activities.
Gemma Westall FBDO - Partner, Practice Manager & Dispensing Optician
Gemma is our practice manager. She has been in the Optical industry since 2014 and qualified as a Dispensing Optician in 2021. She has a particular interest in frame styling and loves helping patients find a frame that makes them look and feel great. In December 2021 Gemma was awarded Dispensing Optician of the Year.
Lewis Mitchell FBDO - Dispensing Optician
Lewis has been in the Optical industry for eight years and studied at ABDO college to become a qualified Dispensing Optician. He is passionate about delivering the best care and finding the best solution for each patient's individual needs.
Hansa Sheehan - Optical Assistant
Hansa has over forty years experience in the Optical industry, working for many years as a Dispensing Optician. Her main focus is to provide the best possible experience for every patient.
Paula Smith - Optical Assistant
Paula has worked in optics for several years as an Optical Assistant. Customer service is at the heart of everything she does. She enjoys helping the customer to feel at ease, find frames they love, and explain the options available to them.
Anna Gowers - Optical Assistant
Anna has worked in Optics since 2021. Her focus is to meet the patient's needs whilst making them feel comfortable during the process.
